This emblem, combining the checkered flag and the American flag was shipped to the New York Motorama on the original prototype Corvette show car. During the show preparations, a member of General Motors legal staff rejected the emblem design noting that the American flag can not be used on a commercial product. As a result, a redesign utilizing the Chevrolet "bow tie" and French fleur-de-lis was quickly created and two new emblems displaying the now familiar Corvette logo were shipped to New York overnight and installed just hours before the show opening.
